For the last 20 or so years, flight passengers could only fly with liquids in a 3.4oz container that had to fit within a quart-sized plastic bag.  This was put in place after the Sept 11^th events, and is designed originally to reduce the chance of a detonation while in air using liquid explosives. 

However, over the last 20 years technology has greatly improved.  The latest version of scanners, which involves new CT scanners, is now being installed in many of the largest airports. Will this mean that full-size items will be once again allowed?  Time shall tell.  However, the TSA did just approve and update their allowed list, and there are 11 items that do not have to follow the 3.4oz rule.

These items are:

1. Over-the-counter medications
2. Prescription medications in gel, liquid or aerosol form
3. Ice packs or gel packs for medically necessary items
4. Food and drink for infants and toddlers
5. Wet batteries
6. Live fish transported in water
7. Biological specimens
8. Breast milk or baby formula
9. Liquid-filled teethers
10. Duty-free items sealed in a tamper-evident bag
11. Fresh eggs

Based on discussion, the items likely to be exempted from this list include shampoo, body wash, perfume, and sunscreen.  The new changes have been implemented in Atlanta, JFK and LAX airports.
